How to Get More 5-Star Airbnb Reviews (Without Spending More Money)-137

If you’re wondering why some vacation rental owners consistently earn glowing reviews while others struggle, in this episode I will show you the practical hospitality habits for getting 5-Star Airbnb reviews that make the biggest difference.

.

Ever feel like you’re doing everything right, but your guest reviews still don’t reflect the effort you put in?

You’re not alone. Many vacation rental owners work incredibly hard behind the scenes, yet still wonder why another property down the road keeps collecting glowing five-star reviews. Today, I’ll show you what those successful hosts do differently, and the good news is it has very little to do with expensive renovations.

.

Hi, I’m Gerry MacPherson and I’ve spent decades working in hospitality, tourism, and guest experience, visiting properties across the world and learning what separates an average stay from one that guests can’t stop talking about.

Whether you own one vacation rental or you’re just thinking about getting started, my goal is simple. I want to help you create happier guests, calmer operations, and a business that becomes easier to run instead of harder.

Because here’s something I’ve learned over the years.

Five-star reviews aren’t usually earned by spending more money.

They’re earned by paying attention to the right things.

.

Over the next few minutes, we’ll look at why guests often decide what review they’re going to leave long before they check out.

We’ll explore the small hospitality habits that quietly build trust throughout a stay.

Finally, I’ll share a practical framework you can start using this week to increase your chances of earning more five-star reviews, along with this week’s free Five-Star Review Action Plan, available in the show notes.

Let’s get started.

.

Your Guests Start Reviewing You Earlier Than You Think

Here’s where many hosts get caught out.

They believe the review starts after checkout.

It doesn’t.

The review starts the moment the booking confirmation lands in your guest’s inbox.

Think about your own holidays.

After you’ve booked accommodation, what do you hope happens next?

You want clear communication.

You want reassurance.

You want to know where to park, how to get inside, and who to contact if something unexpected happens.

None of those things are exciting.

But they all reduce uncertainty.

And that’s one of the biggest jobs in hospitality.

Not entertaining people.

Helping them relax.

The less mental effort your guests have to spend figuring things out, the more they can enjoy the reason they travelled in the first place.

.

Make Arrival Feel Effortless

One of my favourite exercises is asking owners to experience their property as though they’ve never seen it before.

It sounds simple.

It’s surprisingly revealing.

Imagine arriving after a long drive.

You’re tired.

Perhaps it’s raining.

Your phone battery is almost flat.

Now ask yourself.

Would my arrival instructions still make sense?

Would I know exactly where to park?

Could I find the front door without wandering around in the dark?

Would I immediately know the Wi-Fi password?

These little moments often decide how guests feel before they’ve even unpacked.

You don’t have to impress them.

You simply need to remove unnecessary stress.

Hospitality is often invisible.

Guests rarely mention easy check-in because they expected it.

But they definitely notice when it isn’t easy.

That’s why successful hosts spend as much time improving the guest journey as they do improving the property itself.

.

Stop Chasing Luxury. Start Creating Memories.

Now don’t misunderstand me.

Comfort matters.

A good mattress matters.

Cleanliness absolutely matters.

But once those basics are covered, something interesting happens.

Guests begin remembering moments rather than objects.

I’ve stayed in beautiful luxury properties that I’ve forgotten within weeks.

I’ve also stayed in modest cottages where I still remember the handwritten welcome note or the local coffee waiting in the kitchen.

Why?

Because thoughtful hospitality creates emotion.

Emotion creates memories.

Memories become reviews.

A thoughtful welcome doesn’t have to cost much.

Fresh flowers from a local market.

A handwritten note.

A recommendation for your favourite café instead of the one every tourist already knows about.

Those are the things guests tell their friends about.

Not because they’re expensive.

Because they’re personal.

Small gestures often leave the biggest impression.

.

Here’s the Real Secret Behind Five-Star Reviews

Here’s something that surprises many hosts.

Guests don’t expect perfection.

They expect confidence.

Things occasionally go wrong in every property.

A kettle breaks.

The internet drops out.

A light bulb decides today’s the day to retire.

The difference is how you respond.

Imagine two hosts.

The first replies six hours later with a short message saying they’ll look into it tomorrow.

The second replies within minutes, apologises sincerely, offers a temporary solution, and has the problem fixed as quickly as possible.

Same problem.

Completely different guest experience.

Guests are remarkably understanding when they know someone genuinely cares.

That’s why communication is one of the strongest predictors of great reviews.

People don’t expect magic.

They expect effort.

And effort builds trust.

Trust builds confidence.

Confidence builds five-star reviews.

.

What’s been your biggest challenge when trying to earn more five-star reviews?

Is it guest expectations?

Communication?

Pricing?

Or perhaps it’s encouraging guests to actually leave a review.

Let me know in the comments.

.

I read every one, and there’s a good chance another vacation rental owner has experienced exactly the same thing.

.

Build a Five-Star Experience One Step at a Time

So, how do you consistently earn reviews that make future guests feel confident enough to book?

You don’t need a complicated system.

You need a repeatable one.

I like to think of it as five simple habits.

The first is to remove stress before it appears.

Look for the questions guests always ask and answer them before they need to ask. Clear arrival instructions, simple parking information, reliable Wi-Fi details and an easy check-in all help guests relax sooner.

The second is to create one memorable moment.

It doesn’t have to be expensive. A handwritten welcome card, locally roasted coffee, fresh biscuits or a simple message wishing them a wonderful stay can make a lasting impression.

The third is to communicate like a real person.

Automation is helpful, but hospitality should never feel automated. Friendly, warm messages remind guests there is someone behind the business who genuinely cares about their experience.

The fourth is to solve problems quickly.

Every property has the occasional hiccup. The difference is responding quickly, apologising sincerely and fixing the issue before frustration grows.

Finally, finish the stay just as well as you started it.

Thank your guests for choosing your property. Wish them a safe journey home. Hospitality shouldn’t stop at checkout.

When you consistently follow these five habits, you’re not chasing reviews.

You’re creating experiences that naturally deserve them.

Simple.

But incredibly effective.

.

Think Like a First-Time Guest

Here’s a challenge I’d encourage every vacation rental owner to complete this week.

Walk through your own property as though you’ve never seen it before.

Stand outside your front door.

Read your arrival instructions.

Unlock the property.

Find the kettle.

Connect to the Wi-Fi.

Turn on the television.

Have a shower.

Sleep in the bed if you can.

You’ll probably notice several things you’ve become blind to over time.

Perhaps the instructions aren’t as clear as you thought.

Maybe the bedside lamp is awkward to reach.

Perhaps the welcome guide answers most questions, but not the ones guests ask most often.

Fresh eyes reveal hidden opportunities.

That’s exactly why this week’s Five-Star Review Action Plan is designed to help you review every stage of the guest journey. Download it from the show notes and work through it at your own pace. Small improvements soon become big advantages.

If there’s one thing I’d like you to remember, it’s this.
